The high rate of contagion and the speed of transmission caused by the new strain of the coronavirus from the United Kingdom, could generate in Mexico, a country with a high death rate, more severe cases and deaths from Covid disease -19, warn the experts.

The Sars-Cov-2 virus is constantly mutating, it is part of natural selection. This allows it to genetically modify its structure on contact with other cells, making it stronger or weaker, depending on the quality of replication in human organisms.

Most coronavirus mutations are usually a random event with little impact on the properties of the virus, but sometimes they can positively affect the way it survives and reproduces, as is the case with the new strain of the virus. United Kingdom.

Since its appearance in December 2019, scientists have identified around two mutations per month of the Sars-Cov-2 virus, so it is estimated that there are currently 25 mutations of the Covid-19 strain.

A year after it emerged in Wuhan, China, the world learned of the existence of a new strain of the Sars-Cov-2 virus, which comes from the UK, which threatens to be more contagious due to its burden. high viral.

Reported cases

In three weeks, the new strain from the UK has reached countries including Italy, Australia, Denmark, the Netherlands and Iceland, and now Mexico, where health officials have confirmed that the first case had been detected in a 56-year-old man from Tamaulipas.

The carrier, currently intubated, arrived in Mexico City from Amsterdam on December 28.

The new strain of the Sars-Cov-2 virus is 70% more contagious, compared to the virus that emerged over a year ago in Wuhan, China, according to British reports, which could lead to a further increase in severe cases and death.

“It is possible that more people will end up seriously ill or even die from this strain, not because it is more aggressive, but because it has a greater capacity for contagion.”

Carlos Alberto Pantoja, academic of the Faculty of Medicine of UNAM

It is possible that the population that was not infected in the first stage of the coronavirus pandemic, could contract the new strain of the virus from the UK, due to the prevalence of viral load they have and the its ease of propagation.

This was highlighted by Dr Gustavo Olaiz, general coordinator of the Center for Policy, Population and Health Research at the Faculty of Medicine of UNAM, who acknowledged that this new strain could increase the number of cases and deaths in the country. .

The Covid-19 vaccine would give hope in the face of the threat of the new strain of Sars-Cov-2, coming from the United Kingdom. Moderna, Astra Zeneca and Pfizer claim that their biologics work against this variant of Covid-19, claiming that the vaccine attacks the various spicules or tips of the virus.

However, Dr Carlos Alberto Pantoja, an academic at the UNAM Faculty of Medicine, warns that the coronavirus pandemic is not over and the world has not seen the worst case scenario for this virus, so he called citizens to not lower your guard against the existence of vaccines against Covid-19.
